The Story of Derecho Sagrado

Derecho Sagrado translates to Sacred Right in Spanish. The name is inspired by a beautiful line from the Costa Rican National Anthem: “Sacred rights our homeland grants us.” Esteban, our founder, was born in this beautiful country and grew up singing these words in the natural paradise of Costa Rica. Surrounded by peace, the Pura Vida lifestyle, and the country’s incredible weather, these words resonated deeply with him. For us at Derecho Sagrado, they symbolize the sacred rights every person deserves: the right to live with dignity, to enjoy fundamental freedoms, to have access to education, and to lead a decent, fulfilling life. And, of course, the right to savor life’s pleasures, like a perfect cup of coffee.

The Sacred Bean

Beyond the romantic and profound meaning of the name, Derecho Sagrado represents our commitment to excellence in coffee. While Costa Rica contributes only 0.9% to 1% of the world’s coffee output, it is renowned for its specialty coffee. From this small percentage, we carefully select the finest microlots, engaging in direct and fair trade with small-scale farmers. Our dedication to sustainability and quality ensures we offer the best fair trade single-origin, micro, and nano lots of Costa Rica’s specialty coffee.

Born in Costa Rica’s Soul

In Costa Rica, thanks to the ideal climate, the distinct wet and rainy seasons, volcanic soils, the establishment of the Costa Rican Coffee Institute (Icafé), and the passion and dedication of our coffee farmers—who are the true historical drivers of Costa Rica’s economy—we owe much to the coffee industry. It helped build our country, and it remains our true Golden Bean.
